When travelling to Somerset, you must visit Bath's famous Roman Baths. Gradually built over 300 years, with construction beginning in 60 AD, the baths were used by the Roman public to clean themselves and relax within the 46° Celsius (114.8° Fahrenheit) waters. 46° Celsius is around the average temperature of a modern bath, and the hottest temperature ever recorded in Russia! I guess the Roman invasion wasn’t so bad, after all.

The Baths continued use after the Romans left Britain. In the 12th century, John of Tours – no relation to our tour guides – built a new bath over the King’s Spring reservoir. It is said to cure ailments.

The 16th century saw Queen Elizabeth I on the throne, and with her a new bath opened called the “Queen’s Bath”. Historical documents suggest she only bathed once a month; so its possible the architects were hinting at something. Towards the end of the 18th century, the spring was housed by the architect John Woods the Elder, and his son, John Woods the Younger.

Today, there is a museum which is home to various artefacts from the Roman period: thousands of Denari coins, a bronze head of the goddess Sulis Minerva, and dozens of other fascinating things. They even have the remnants of hypocaust flooring (otherwise known as heated flooring) which served as sweat rooms. Why not visit the pump room? They serve the quintessentially British cake and tea here, all whilst being able to enjoy the nearby spa water fountain. Visiting the Roman Baths truly is a great day out, so come on down!
