Embark on a captivating shore excursion from Southampton to explore two of England's most mysterious prehistoric sites: Woodhenge and Stonehenge.

Marker pillars rising from the ground.

Woodhenge: A Glimpse into Neolithic Rituals

Our journey begins with a visit to Woodhenge, a fascinating Neolithic monument near Stonehenge. Built around 2600 BC, this site originally featured six concentric rings of massive timber posts. Today, concrete pillars mark their positions, allowing you to visualize the imposing structure that once stood. Its alignment with the summer solstice sunrise suggests a profound ceremonial purpose, potentially linked to rituals of life and death, especially given the discovery of a child's burial at its center. Woodhenge offers a compelling look into the beliefs and practices of prehistoric communities.

Stonehenge: An Enduring Mystery

A short drive brings us to Stonehenge, the iconic prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain. This awe-inspiring ring of standing stones, composed of massive sarsens and smaller bluestones, was constructed in several phases between 3000 BCE and 1600 BCE. Its purpose continues to fuel intense archaeological debate.

The most striking features are the outer circle of sarsen stones, topped with horizontal lintels, and the inner ring of bluestones. Surrounding the stone circles are earthworks, including a ditch and bank. Theories about Stonehenge's purpose range from a burial ground to a ceremonial site or an astronomical calendar, all contributing to its enduring mystery and historical significance.

Straw roof Bronze Age huts.

At the Stonehenge Visitor Centre, you'll delve deeper into the monument's evolution. Discover locally unearthed artifacts, including the tools used in its construction, and explore theories about its function, from marking solstices to lunar observations. Outside, reconstructed Bronze Age huts offer a glimpse into the lives of the ancient people who shaped this extraordinary landscape.

Throughout your shore excursion, your knowledgeable guide will provide fascinating insights into the history and culture of these remarkable sites, ensuring a comfortable and enriching experience. We'll conclude our tour with a timely return to Southampton Cruise Terminal.
