The magnificent Salsbury Cathedral, a marvel of medieval engineering, with its famous spire being the tallest in England at over 404 feet (about 110 metres). The ingenious weight-saving honeycomb interior is a testament to the skill of the builders. A 650-year-old mechanical clock and fine early English Gothic architecture can be found inside the cathedral. One of the greatest treasures here is Magna Carta, a document sealed by King John in 1215. The 800-year-old Chapter House with its Old Testament frieze is also not to be missed.

Stonehenge
A short drive from Salisbury is Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in the ancient county of Wiltshire, consisting of a ring of standing stones, each a massive sarsen or bluestone, arranged in a circular pattern. The site's construction, spanning several phases from around 3000 BCE to 1600 BCE, remains a subject of intense archaeological debate.

The most iconic feature is the outer circle of sarsen stones, topped with horizontal lintels, and the inner ring of smaller bluestones. Surrounding the stone circles are earthworks, including a ditch and bank. The purpose of Stonehenge is still unknown, but theories range from a burial ground to a ceremonial site or an astronomical calendar, all contributing to its enduring mystery and historical significance.

The Visitor Centre provides an immersive experience, allowing you to visualise the stone circle's evolution through the ages. Discover locally unearthed artefacts, including the tools used in its construction, and learn about the theories surrounding its purpose, from marking solstices to lunar observations. Outside, witness reconstructions of Bronze Age huts, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped this ancient landscape.
