Next stop for lunch is The Wheatsheaf, a charming 17th-century traditional English pub nestled in the charming village of Lower Woodford. This inviting country pub boasts a beautiful beer garden, making it the perfect place to unwind in with a delicious meal and refreshing drink.
A short drive from Stonehenge is Salisbury, a beautiful medieval city built on an ancient site. Here, you'll visit the magnificent Salisbury Cathedral, which boasts the tallest spire in Britain. Built between 1220 and 1280, the Cathedral still holds one of the original copies of Magna Carta. There are many artistic and historical treasures to see at the Cathedral, including a modernist sculpture by Barbara Hepworth and a fascinating fourteenth-century mechanical clock. There'll be just enough time for a quick wander around the city centre before heading off to see amazing Neolithic monuments.
Next on the itinerary is Stonehenge's lesser-known cousin, Woodhenge. Here, you'll see pillars marking the positions of Neolithic wooden posts that have long since rotted away. Woodhenge is an important World Heritage Site and consists of six concentric circles of standing posts, surrounded by a bank and ditch.
Stonehenge itself began as a burial ground over 4,500 years ago and has been altered many times throughout history, with stones being added and the site being reformed. One of the most significant changes was the addition of the bluestones, which were quarried in Wales and transported over many miles to Stonehenge using the limited technology of the era. This would have required a large number of people and tremendous organisation.
On site is the fantastic Stonehenge Visitor Centre, where (if your time slot allows) you can delve deeper into the mysteries of the ancient stones. Here you'll find world-class exhibitions and multimedia displays. Outside, there are reconstructed Neolithic houses where you might even catch demonstrations of ancient crafts and bread-making using prehistoric techniques.
